Technical Q&A
General Questions

  1. I need to choose an extruder for my next project. Do extruders specialize in certain areas? Like many other industries, extruders have their areas of specialization. Some work only on large runs, others on small runs. There are extruders that specialize in certain alloy series, while others may specialize in close tolerances, miniature shapes or extremely large shapes. Choose the extruder that best fits the needs of you and your order. For an excellent start in your selection process, try the Aluminum Extruders Council's "Buyers' Guide," which offers a complete listing of extruders and their capabilities.
  2. I want to use an aluminum extrusion for my next design, but I'm afraid the cost for tooling dies will be too expensive. Do extruders have standard dies I can use? Yes. In extruders' terminology "standard dies" are angles, channels, bars, tubes, pipes, etc. However, it's important to note that a "custom die," made to your own design specifications, often will cost only "a few hundred dollars," and that cost is usually made up quickly with savings in manufacturing/assembly and the economics of using metal "only where you need it."
