In this webinar, the different lubricants and release agents for the extrusion process will be discussed, and innovations in terms of safe and environmentally friendly lubricants will be presented by Martin Hartlieb of MotulTech Baraldi. Martin will explain how those new lubricants and release agents are capable of replacing conventional products used in the different application points of the extrusion process (dummy block, shear, die, container-fix platen) and demonstrate tangible improvements compared to those conventional lubricants and release agents that are currently in use.

The first focus is on the dummy block, where the objectives of most extruders are to overcome the problems of currently applied products (e.g. Boron Nitride, greases or pigment pastes or gas black), smoke and flames, dirty environment and health risks to the operators. Boron Nitride, the most commonly used product, is often spread beyond the target application and causes deposits, slippery floors and sometimes even inclusions or streaks on the extruded profiles, as well as discomfort when inhaled by humans. All these environmental and health issues can be overcome with innovative water based (oil free) release agent formulated on the basis of a synthetic active component using chemical solutions very effectively. It will be explained how the application performance is enhanced by the ability of the fluids to form films quickly and effectively on hot metal surfaces (even at temperatures over 750 degrees F, despite the fact that they are water based) and exhibit excellent adhesion characteristics and anti-sticking/releasing power at all operating temperatures.

Other technological innovations in environmentally friendly lubricants for the extrusion process will also be presented and the advantages (compared to most existing solutions) explained. As for shears (for billet cutting and end cycle bottom cutting) new "cleaner" products have been developed. For profile cutting, where carbon residues after heat treatment are the main issue to be eliminated, new synthetic and fully evanescent lubricants will be presented. Other specific solutions to common technical issues will also be presented, like for extrusion dies pre-treatment, container-fixed parts of the machine sealing and lubrication.
