Extrusion dies can be made to produce an almost limitless array of extrusion shapes and sizes. Some dies produce simple shapes; others are quite complex. Some dies that look simple to the designer may, in fact, be difficult to extrude. How do you know if your design is easy or difficult to produce?

If you’re interested in knowing more about how aluminum moves through a die to create a desired part, this webinar is for you. We will discuss die design – and what makes a section difficult or easy to extrude. We’ll also cover how specific extrusion artifacts– e.g. location of screw lugs and walls, -- affect surface properties. And we’ll cover the flow of metal through the container to provide a better understanding of the challenges of die design, and how design impacts quality

Finally, you’ll learn how to design interlocking sections in order to make more complex products from multiple extrusions. And we’ll cover the benefits of discussing your objectives with an extruder early in the design process.

Richard is the editor and coauthor of Hydro’s die design and manufacturing manuals. As leader of Hydro Aluminum’s International Die Team, for many years, he drove the effort to create and/or refine ever-more productive die designs. Richard’s passion remains advancing extrusion beyond its current limits through understanding and education.

Rick Liscomb
Combining extrusion and die design with the former Alcan (now Rio Tinto) and EXCO, a global designer and manufacturer of dies, Rick Liscomb has been part of the aluminum extrusion industry for over 40 years. He has held various positions from janitorial through to upper management. The die side of his career has ranged from production design through to many die development teams.
