Impact of COVID-19 on the Italian Aluminum Industry
Raffaele D'Andrea, Emmebi, SrL
Raffaele D'Andrea presents an overview of COVID-19 and its transmission, addressing the milestones of Italy's coronavirus outbreak and the
spread of infection in hardest-hit Northern Italy during the first quarter of 2020 and the Italian Government's response to contain and mitigate the surge in cases. Mr. D'Andrea examines Italy's national restrictions and regulations put in place
to facilitate the re-opening of factories, describing best practices in several aluminum industry plants, from personnel access to factories to smart working. He highlights Italian aluminum companies' experiences as they navigated and applied
the restrictions and regulations that were implemented throughout Italy and discusses how their strategies worked. Mr. D'Andrea concludes with an update on the current status of the COVID-19 situation in the Italian aluminum industry, and he will
field your questions on how Italy's aluminum plants have met many challenges to beat COVID-19 so successfully. This is a must-see session that will surely help to guide our way forward in North America!
Jeff Henderson, AEC
AEC President Jeff Henderson will give members an update on the Council's initiatives and provide a glimpse into what members can expect in the year ahead.
Industry Promotion Update

Management Issues: Safety & Fair Trade
- Session 1:
- International Panel Discussion: What it Takes to Beat COVID-19; Raffaele D’Andrea, Emmebi S.r.L., Italy; Joe Jackman, Almag Aluminum Inc., Canada; Bradley Wyatt, Kaiser Aluminum, USA; and Evan Neale, Service Center Metals, USA; Dr. Arianna Michelutti, I.R.C.C.S. Medea, La Nostra Famiglia, Italy
the international extrusion community’s strategies and recommendations on what your company can do to help mitigate COVID-19. This international panel of aluminum extruders speaks out – from Italy, Canada, and the U.S. to discuss what has
worked in their countries at their extrusion plants to manage, mitigate and turn the corner on the novel coronavirus. The panel also offers comments and perspective from an Italian doctor who has dealt with the pandemic’s human toll first-hand.
- Session 2:
- Aluminum Extrusion Fair Trade Case Update; Robert DeFrancesco, Wiley Law
Robert will go into greater detail about:
- Our preparations for next year’s Sunset Review for our China trade orders
- Trade & Industry data about the impacts we are feeling from imported extrusions from other countries
- Review of the options available to us to address these challenges
- Session 3:
- Section 232 Update and the Path Forward; Matthew McConkey & Warren Payne, Mayer Brown; Jeff Henderson, AEC
Our attorneys for the Section 232 case will provide an update on the Aluminum Section 232 tariff measures and
perspectives from Washington D.C. They will examine changes in the 232, including modifications to the exclusion process. Then, AEC President Jeff Henderson will summarize the views heard from our trade attorneys and discuss the best options in
preparation for the Sunset Review. More than 10 countries have been identified as creating injury to our market. Many of them have a unique story. So, with a ‘one size fits all’ strategy unavailable, what do we agree is this the best path forward?
Plan to join this interactive meeting so we can discuss this critical issue.
- Session 1:
- Thermomechanical Processing and Temperature Measurement; Richard Dickson, Hydro
Richard will cover the impact of improving temperature control on the extrusion process. He will link the reduction in variability of process temperatures,
both directly with increased productivity, but also through opportunities to utilize improved die designs and alloy selection.
Systems and tools for measuring temperature variability will be shown, as will some tips on reducing variability.
- Session 2:
- Keeping Up: a Short Refresher on Extrusion Press Maintenance; Al Kennedy, Kennedy Eurotech
As professionals, we are constantly challenged to refresh our know-how and learn what’s new in our field. To address these needs,
in this webinar we offer our take on the following topics:
Everyone involved in maintenance – technician, manager, production chief – will find something of interest in this session.
- How maintenance can impact press productivity
- Some basic principles of maintenance management
- Press alignment
- A review of metallurgical issues and dealing with press fatigue failures
- A few ideas for controlling energy cost
- Technical tools: thermal imaging
- Session 3:
- Virtual Reality Training Engages Learners with On-the-Job Scenarios; John McDougall; TrainPoint VR
Virtual reality is increasingly used in employee training programs; TrainPoint VR (Virtual Reality) defines the differences between
virtual and augmented reality. The speakers will present the specifics of their virtual reality training platform, citing examples of the many types of training benefits VR can perform and the metrics that can be captured. VR training
module demonstrations show why this virtual experience is found so valuable to the learning process and how it can be applied to teams at your facilities. John will take Live Q&A to conclude this presentation.
