Extrusion Press Safety from a Hydraulic System Design Perspective

ABSTRACT—Hydraulic extrusion press safety is given close attention from the facilities and
operator perspectives, but this discussion will view press safety from the hydraulic system design
perspective. There are very practical safety principles that can be built into the hydraulic system,
given the right valve components, which will ensure the safety of press equipment, and most
importantly, of plant personnel. In this presentation, principles that will be examined include
methods of accumulator shutoff/isolation, press shutoff/isolation, prevention of press creep under
prefill pressure, and methods of anti-intensification at the pullback cylinders. In addition to these
system concepts, the unique features of the valve components which make them suitable for these
applications will also be examined, including the high-pressure accumulator shutoff valve, and
the counter-balance valve, among others. For the purposes of this discussion, Hauhinco water
hydraulic valves and systems will be referenced.
